Back in October, my family and I were invited on a press trip to visit some amazing places in Colorado. I have been to Colorado many times before (the perks of being the daughter of a retired airline Captain and flight attendant) and it’s honestly one of my favorite places to visit. After landing in Denver Airport we made a bee line for Boulder.
And oh Boulder, how I love thee. This was the second time I have been to Boulder and just like last time, it has this magical/mystical feeling to me. I feel like I have come home. Where yoga, eating your placenta and obessing about food is not weird, it’s cool.
Although for all of Boulder’s weirdness and hipness, boy, did we get some looks wearing our matchy-matchy J.Crew leopard print pants. Apparently matchy-matchy is a very Southern thing and not a hip Mountain mama thing, whatevs. I represented Southern Mamas well.
Pear Street is the epicenter of Boulder’s coolness, full of shops and restaurants. We stayed at the Hotel Boulderado just a few streets over. It was about a 5-minute walk from our hotel to get right in the middle of things.
Hotel Boulderado was a historic hotel and one of the nicest places to stay in Boulder. It has one of those old school elevators that require an operator to go up with you. Penelope loved it!
We ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant on our second morning and I was so excited to see gluten-free pancakes on the menu. They even made a smiley face with fruit and bacon. Penelope was thrilled. At pretty much every restaurant we ate in Boulder, there was plenty of farm-to-table and gluten-free menu options. I was in heaven the whole time.
On our second day in Boulder we went to Chautauqua Park and attempted to do a little hike.
Little Miss was not in the mood to hike. But boy did she look cute in Tea Collection outfit. This is one of her favorite dresses.
Looking back, both Peter and I were jet lagged, and having trouble adjusting to the altitude, so I am sure she was not feeling well either. Next time we travel to Colorado or any place that is a higher elevation than Florida (uh, which is everywhere) we are going to go a bit slower the first couple of days and ease into traveling at full speed.
We got to see a Mama and Baby bear in a tree. It was awesome! Apparently, you can see them often this time a year as they do their last-minute foraging and eating to get ready for hibernation in the winter.
This is your official disclaimer for my week’s worth of Colorado posts: there will be lots of tree porn, ahem, fall foliage shots. I couldn’t help myself as it was all just so stunningly beautiful.
Just a few minute drive outside of downtown Boulder is Boulder Falls. It was literally a 5-minute hike, so it was a perfect thing to do on your ease-into-the-altitude and relax days.

On our last day in Boulder, we got to go to the Boulder Farmer’s Market. I about peed in my pants I was so excited to get shots of food and talk to farmers. Some of the farmers there have been at the market for over 25 years.
Raw milk is totally illegal there, so sad. You have to do a cow co-op thing were you co-own a cow with several other people and then the farmer does deliveries once a week. I am so grateful for the system where I live. All I have do to is go to our local natural foods grocery store and ask someone to get it for me from the back, because they aren’t allowed to have it on shelves even though they can sell it.
We ate at some amazing restaurants in Boulder, some of the best on the whole trip to Colorado, like the Dushanbe Teahouse. The Teahouse was constructed in Dushanbe, Tajikistan as a gift to their sister city, Boulder. It was disassembled, crated up, and sent halfway around the world to be rebuilt in Boulder as a symbol of friendship and cultural exploration.
We also ate at a farm to table restaurant called Salt. We sat in the back and I got to watch the chefs work. It’s really amazing how much I love food and cooking now. And how adventurous I am when trying new foods. I made everyone give me a taste of what they ordered so I could try everything. I ordered the Pastured Steak Tartare and their lard appetizer. Everything was delicious.
We went to a farm to table restaurant The Kitchen on both days. Because of a certain chocolate dessert that I needed to have. If you go to Boulder and love chocolate like I do, you must get the Pot Au Chocolate. I wanted to dive into a pool of it. Or take a bath in it. Or just sit there and not see another mountain or fall leaf and just eat chocolate cake all day for the rest of the two weeks. It was that good. Although, Cassandra’s flourless chocolate cake is a pretty close second.
