Brush Your Teeth with Essential Oils

The idea behind a whole week of posts about healthy teeth came about from a very mild toothache that started a couple of months ago. I have long known that the health of your teeth and gums were an indicator for overall health, but I didn’t really know details. And I knew that a toothache was not a good sign, even a little mild one like mine.

At first I thought it was from grinding my teeth over the stress of my la
miscarriage. I have a bit of a crossbite despite years and years of orthodontics and there are certain teeth that get the brunt of the pressure when my mouth is closed instead of the pressure being evenly distributed.

As I learned more about gum disease from the founder of OraWellness and author of Cure Tooth Decay, I realized that I was eating too many grains and sugars and it could be affecting my teeth.

Not 4 days after I started using OraWellness, my toothache went away! I had been brushing with Jason’s Organic toothpaste since I was in college. And while it is better than non-organic tooth paste it still has some unnatural things in it and clearly it was not doing a good enough job killing all the bacteria in my mouth.

I highly recommend OraWellness and switching to brushing your teeth with this essential oil blend. Or if you’re not a fan of oil blends, this remineralizing toothpaste from Wellnesse if a family favorite.

Here is a little video about brushing my teeth with OraWellness. Note: at the end I say I don’t spit out, but what I meant to say is that I do spit out but I just don’t spit everything out after brushing. If I have a little residue of the oil in my mouth, I just keep it in there. It tastes good and helps kill the last of the bacteria! Also, OraWellness promotes a very specific way to brush your teeth to help kill even more bacteria. Old habits die hard for me and I still brush my teeth like normal, but just using the product and their oil blend, even with brushing the old way, has been a big help in my journey towards healthier teeth!

I have been using the OraWellness product for about two weeks. I love it! I brushed with the charcoal for the first time last night. Are you using toothpaste anymore or just OraWellness? Also, how often should we brush with the charcoal. I also need to start using the OraWellness product on my 10month old daughter.

Cool! I brush with Jason’s about once a week still. Some people have more build up on teeth than others and still need something a little abrasive to help. We are going to have a tutorial on how to make a homemade paste with OraWellness this week, so that could be an option for you too. Good luck with your daughter! I wish I had known about this product before I introduced store bought natural toothpaste to my daughter, I can’t get her to brush with OraWellness because it’s different. But if it was all she ever knew, then it would be fine! I do the charcoal about once a week too.

I was really excited about this post! I have always had problematic teeth (cavities, cracks, chips, crowns, root canals and swollen, red gums). I wanted to give this a try but then I read that it has an almond oil base. My husband is allergic to almonds and I’d hate to brush my teeth, kiss him and him have an allergic reaction!

      Hi Kimberly,
We can make a special blend for you (or your hubby) made with another organic carrier oil, not a nut oil. That way you can have the freshest, kissable breath and no concerns! 🙂 Just let us know in the comment section that you need a spacial formula.

How I wish I could use this product! I’m actually allergic to cinnamon oil and can’t put it in my mouth or let it touch my skin. Bummer! I guess I’ll keep looking for other options 🙂

What do you recommend for little ones? I have a 2 and 4 year old. We use organic toothpaste, but I’m wondering if the essential oils would be safe for them instead?

It’s safe for them, it will just be a matter of convincing them to try it. Which we all know, getting a toddler to try something new is like herding cats. 🙂

When you go to the dentist, how do you deal with the chemicals they use on your teeth (flouride, etc.)? I mean like do you ask them not to use it on you, do they offer more natural alternatives, or do you just let them put it on your teeth because it’s only once in a while?

      Hi Selah,
You have the right to clearly state that you do not want that used on your teeth. I actually bring with me the products that i am willing to use in my mouth and tell the dentist that is what is to be used. I bring a bottle or OraWellness and a mixture of peroxide and saltwater to swish. They are happy to cooperate.

I don’t use mouthwash, I just use the OraWellness. I drop a few drops in with some water and swish. 🙂

Hi Stephanie! Is this safe for babies? I have a one year old. Thanks!

Yup! Just be sure to dilute it a bit, like you do when doing mouthwash.

Are you sure this is safe for babies? I’m concerned because some of the essential oils are not recommended for certain ages. For example,

    1. Cinnamon is safe for babies 6+ months
    2. Peppermint is safe for children 6+ YEARS
    3. Spearmint is safe for children 2+ YEARS
    4. Clove is safe for children 2+ YEARS
    5. Myrrh Is safe for children 2+ YEARS
    6. Manuka ?? I couldn’t find the age minimum.

I’m worried because sometime I get the blend on my hands or it lingers in my mouth and I worry about being around my baby if it’s not safe to breath it for her. Please let me know if and why it is or isn’t safe. Thank you! I’m so paranoid when I smell it to be near her 🙁

I have never used it on a baby myself so I can’t say from experience. You should contact the company and ask them.
