Oh, be still my heart! Look how big she is! It feels like just yesterday that it was the end of 4th trimester but somehow Penelope is four and half years old.
I try to do some sort of art/craft every afternoon so that we both have time to connect and decompress together after a busy day of school and work. We had a fun week last week, making garden markers for our little veggie garden. She really enjoyed this kid craft.
This project was really simple. I set out the seed packages so she had a visual of what to draw and how to spell the veggie’s name, then she went to town. She is such a budding artist and has really great fine motor skills and good attention span. It took us forever, because we just did a little every day, but it was fun. Once they were done, we took them to the UPS store and got them laminated. We then cut them out and hot glued them to craft sticks.
When it was time to put them out, she was excited. The raised garden bed from EarthEasy.com we got last summer is still working great for us!
Still loving my small, rolling composter too.
Our little baby cucumbers are growing up!
Baby beets are making their way to the sun too.
An heirloom Everglades cherry tomato. I am trying to grow these… again. Still on a steep South Florida gardening learning curve, but I am getting better! Remember, gardening is all just one big experiment. Even master gardeners and lifelong farmers make mistakes and learn something new every season, so don’t let the fear of failure hold you back from gardening. My gardening cookbook is a great tool to help you get started if you are itching to start a garden this year!
Some mini zinnias popping up from last summer. I sure do miss my big Tallahassee zinnias too though.
Miss Penelope loves to pretend play that she is a flower growing when we are outside or doing yoga. She starts in child pose as a “seed” (great way for kids to ground themselves!), then I water her and she takes a big, deep breath and begins to get taller, taking deep breaths until she standing tall, chest open, arms open wide and she is a full grown flower, her spirit full of positive energy.
Miss Sadie Sev Ella joined the fun too. I have to say though, she is the WORST dog. 🙂 OMG, she is still not potty trained, chews Penelope’s headbands and toys all the time, eats her own poop, barks incessantly and she has just been a sickly, little runt dog (post on that coming soon). I don’t know what I was thinking getting a puppy! Of course we love her and we are glad she is here, but Lord have mercy. Do not let me ever get a puppy again until I am retired!
Our banana tree that I planted when we first moved in a year ago is doing great! I can’t believe we have been here a year already! I love that tree so much. It represents resiliency to me, reminds me that I can thrive and bloom and stretch and grow even after uncomfortable times of transition and struggle.
These are some other cute ideas for DIY garden marker kid crafts: rainbow garden markers and vegetable garden rock signs. Have fun getting crafty and gardening with your kid!

June 6, 2014 at 6:48 PMI felt the SAME way when we got our golden retriever puppy! He was a lot more work than we anticipated. We put him through a training class and would try to exercise him daily but he was still destructive. He is now 1 year and 2 months old and we can finally let him out of his dog crate unsupervised. As he gets older his behavior keeps improving, but man was it rough for awhile!
