cement block garden bed

I have been gardening since I was a kid, in fact I grew up on an avocado farm in Homestead, Fl. But I really got serious and interested in gardening about 5 years ago. Before then I would just grow in pots on my porch.

If you are starting a garden for the first time this year be sure to check out my Gardening by the Moon post with a free printable calendar, that tells you what to plant and when.

M+BL staff writer, Haley, has a great post today about how to start a garden bed with wood as well.

When I first started my vegetable garden we used cement blocks and it was only a 9×6 foot plot. The next year I extended it to a 10×30 foot plot and it has been that big since then. I have tried all sorts of gardening, watering and composting techniques over the years but the one thing that has not changed is the cement blocks. They may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but they have held up great and were super easy to get started with 5 years ago.

Also, in this episode is how I make my Grain Free Chicken Nuggets. They are to-die for. In fact, I think I need to make another batch this week!

Your garden is pretty! I want to start a garden for the first time this year…we are currently building a house out in the country, so we have a ton of large rocks from the excavation. I’m thinking of doing a raised bed with stacked rocks. Any tips on keeping pests out naturally?

Thank you! Marigold flowers are great for keeping bugs away. And simple soap and water, or vinegar sprays can work too.

Is there a specific paint you would have used that was “safe” if you had painted your blocks?

There are all kinds of great No VOC, low VOC, or milk based paint that are good.

I do at least 3 pounds, but I usually am doing about 6 to 8 pounds at a time and busting out a whole bunch at once to have a nice stash in the freezer.
