How To Grow Zinnias

Zinnias are so fun and easy to grow! They’re a perfect beginner flower to grow. They make the best cut flowers too. And they are cheap! All you need is one little packet of seeds and you will have a bounty of flowers. Each tiny seed makes a huge grouping of stems. They are huge producers too, constantly blooming for a couple of months.

Some tips on growing zinnias:

  • Zinnias need warmth, full sun and well drained soil.
  • Naturally fertilize your soil once a year. Just like vegetables, they suck up the nutrients out of the soil. So replace it at least once a year with mushroom compost or your own from your compost bin.
  • Dead head old blooms to encourage new growth. Dead head simply means you pinch or cut off a dead flower. This makes the plant look nicer too.
  • When cutting flowers for a vase, be sure to cut just above the next bud, to keep the flowers coming.
  • After about two months they will start to look brown and wilted. You will still get some flowers, but I like to go ahead pull them out, so they don’t suck out any more nutrients in my soil than needed. (Scroll all the way to the bottom to see what brown and wilted zinnias look like.)
  • They naturally reseed – so I haven’t opened up a packet of zinnia flowers in years!
