I won’t lie that I really struggled to write this post. I wasn’t even sure if December would be a good time to share it because this sort of thing is generally saved for the time of renewal at the beginning of the year.
Then I thought about the rampant depression that hits especially hard during the winter months (for the northern hemisphere) and particularly because of the holiday season. We’re supposed to be surrounded by family, love, warmth, and comfort. Despite the cheery holiday TV commercials and variety of traditions meant to bring people together, for many of us this time of year ends up being about disappointments, loneliness, grief, and hopelessness.
If you’re not in that group, you are either incredibly blessed or worked very hard to avoid that experience. Regardless of what your holiday season holds for you, I felt it was important to talk about reconnection now and give everyone this month to ponder some things before heading into the new year.
Reconnection doesn’t have to be anything complicated. It doesn’t have to be spiritually based or about religion. The goal of reconnection is to release our ties to modern conveniences that have pushed us away from truly living. It’s about embracing all aspects of life around us to not only be more fulfilled, but also to relieve stress and ground ourselves amongst the crazy and hectic things that happen. What does it mean for you to be connected with life?
In the last year, I’ve made it my goal to be reconnected. I grew up with computers, cell phones, and TV. I had all 3 of my very own by the time I was 11 years old. It was with the transformation of motherhood that I realized I craved so much more. Constantly being tethered to things left me wanting and so I sought a simple way to move beyond it all.
My goal is to cherish and be mindful of all the life that surrounds me.
Walk barefoot, through the grass and on the sidewalk. Squish mud between your toes. Stand out in the rain and feel the water drip down your face. Lay in a snow bank, a pile of leaves or on a grassy hill. Watch the seasons change. Feel the heat of the sun move across your skin as the world turns.
Hug a friend. Look into your lover’s eyes. Give your baby a massage. Call a relative and let them tell you boring stories. Stare out windows every chance you get and memorize the details you see. Listen to the sound of your child, spouse or pet breathe. Listen to your own breath.
Craft something with your hands. Work with natural materials like wool or wood. Share your experience with another person. Grow anything, even if it’s just mold in leftovers. Create art.
Watch the moon rise in the evening and birth the stars at night. Inhale cold air and feel your body warm it. Allow yourself to experience emotions without explanation. Listen, to everything, especially when you think it’s quiet.
Enjoy your body, no matter what it looks like or what ailments you have. Walk without purpose. Preserve something.
